Botswana’s long-awaited leather park to be built in stages

Plans for a new leather park in Botswana, which first emerged more than six years ago, have hit another setback after it was confirmed construction would take place in phases rather than as part of one complete project.

The idea of building this facility in Lobatse, in the south east of Botswana, was first discussed in 2013 but the project has met with a number of delays due to a lack of funding. The region has long been a centre for meat processing.

In the latest development, the mayor of Lobatse, Malebogo Kruger, said the project, which initially proposed the building of five tanneries, will instead commence with the construction of just one. 

She explained that the decision to downgrade the project into phases has been taken due to a lack of cattle skins in the country, which led to the conclusion that a large leather processing plant is not required at this time.

Ms Kruger did add, however, that the plan is to add further tanneries as the availability of cattle skins increases, although no time-frame was given for the future phases of this development.
