Leathergoods start-up determined to make the most of Botswana’s resources

Two entrepreneurs in Botswana who are beneficiaries of a government youth development fund and poverty eradication programme, Monei Gadise and Bonno Dintweng, have teamed up to launch a leathergoods manufacturing company.

Ms Dintweng said on announcing the new initiative that one of the key aims she shares with her partner is to lower Botwswana’s depdence on imports for leather products.

She pointed out that other projects supported by the same programme had attempted in the past to address issues such as the collection and preservation of hides and skins, but most of these lasted barely a few months before closing, partly owing to a lack of funding.

She said it was a pity Botswana’s leather and leathergoods sectors are poorly established because the country’s cattle herd exceeds the population of two million people and constitutes a valuable resource and potential source of employment.
