Kenya’s tanneries need stricter standards, says government

Kenya’s tanners have little or no information on grading processes, according to the acting secretary of Kenya Leather Development Council Charles Ndung'u, who was speaking at an industry meeting in Naivasha.

Charles Ndung'u said this means they can produce lower quality products than necessary, reported local press.

Representatives from the government-led Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) said they will set standards for the leather industry to improve productivity.

"For Kenya to attain its goal of becoming a manufacturing hub in Eastern Africa, standards must be employed and observed," said Kebs managing director Charles Ongwae. "This will mainly be done through a value addition process that adheres to laid out standards."
