Kenya invites tanning groups and manufacturers to invest in new 'leather city'

A ‘leather city’ has been earmarked for Kenya, part of a government-led initiative to boost the value of leather in the country, and it has invited tanning groups and manufacturers to invest.

“90% of our leather is exported in wet blue form,” said the minister of industrialisation, Adan Mohammed. “What potentially we could earn as a country is 10 times that – nearly $1 billion of potential value if we move from wet blue to processed leather in this country.

“We want to bring the raw materials here. We want major players to invest here and finish the leather into their products.”

The government wants leather sector exports to grow from $300 million to $1 billion in the next 18 months.

The ‘leather city’, which is in the first phase of construction and will house 15 tanneries, will be funded by the private sector and is expected to cost $65 million.
