South Africa: Leather import duties should remain, says SAFLIA

Import duties on footwear and leathergoods brought into South Africa should remain, according to the Southern African Footwear and Leather Industries Association (SAFLIA).

Local industry newsletter S&V reported that the items are on a list of tariffs which might be removed to improve trade among certain African countries.

However, leather industry representatives think the removal of duties will harm South African manufacturing.

“Our aim is not to harm legitimate importers, but there is strong suspicion that some imports are coming into South Africa duty free as a result of being transhipped via countries that have duty free access,” said SAFLIA executive director Jirka Vymetal.
