Ethiopia’s leather sector given boost after disappointing performance

Press in Africa have reported that the Ethiopia-based Leather Industry Development Institute has been awarded part of a $140,000 grant to help improve the country's leather sector.

During a workshop to discuss the government’s five-year Growth and Transformation Plan (2010 to 2015), it was noted tanneries, shoe factories, glove makers had performed below expectations set out in the plan.

The government had set a target of 30 million shoes to be produced during the period, but only 10 million were, according to the report.

Around 65 million square feet of leather was produced, about half the target. Selling prices for leather also fell below expectations.
