Mercedes-Benz confirms plans for Egypt plant

Automotive brand Mercedes-Benz has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Egyptian government for the assembly of passenger cars in the country. It would be set up by a local business partner.

"In building up a local car assembly, we will be able to structure our production network even more flexibly and efficiently and respond even better to the needs of our customers," said Jörg Burzer, Mercedes-Benz Cars executive board member in charge of production and supply chain.

The group explained that it sees “long-term market potential” in Egypt, which could lead to further investments in the country, for example an expansion of its dealer network there or the establishment of a logistical hub in the Suez Canal Special Economic Zone. It also suggested a training centre could be set up there.
