Mercedes-Benz mulls building of Egypt assembly plant

Mercedes-Benz has announced it is in discussions to build a new passenger car assembly plant in Egypt, saying this is part of efforts to enhance its global production network.

The facility would be built by a local business partner, according to the company. It is in talks with the Egyptian government to move the project forward. 

Making the announcement, Markus Schäfer, the member of the Mercedes-Benz divisional board in charge of production and supply chain, said: “Egypt is an attractive and competitive location for production and supporting logistics. With the planned local assembly we are confident to be able to expand our market position. Furthermore, with our broad-based product portfolio, our electric initiative as well as our expertise in respect of modern mobility concepts, we are ready to support the Egyptian authorities in related projects.”
