A large state-of-the-art tannery is being planned in Egypt by local leather group Piel Color using Italian machinery, according to state information service Egypt Today.

It reported President Abdel Fattah El Sisi asked that the facility be built to the highest global standards.

The factory will convert leather waste into organic fertilisers and other byproducts such as gelatine and bio diesel.

President Sisi also asked that locally manufactured leather products will become available to citizens “at reasonable prices”.

Piel Color also plans to build shoe factories and a solar energy station, according to its own website.
