Training course aims to boost Rwandan footwear industry

The COMESA-Leather and Leather Products Institute (LLPI) recently organised a training course in leather footwear design and finishing for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Masaka, Rwanda. 

The event took place in the town’s Business Incubation Centre and was supported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and East Africa community Affairs (MINEACOM), the Workforce Development Authority (WDA) and the Rwandese Association for the Promotion of Leather and Leather Products (RAPROEP). 

A total of 30 trainees came from across Rwanda to take part in the training session. COMESA-LLPI explained that its aim was to enhance the productivity and quality of footwear production in the country by improving the knowhow, skills and attitude of SMEs. 

Among the topics covered during the training course were basic leather specifications and their suitability for footwear production; the characteristics of bonded leather and regular leather; the characteristics and classification of lasts for various shoes styles; the principles of design; the techniques used to construct basic upper patterns; and shoe finishing techniques. 

The LLPI team also visited two production units operated by SMEs and a small training centre run by a church in Kigali. They also met with experts from the WDA.
