Sudan will receive €2.9 million between 2016 and 2017 to help it reach its export potential, following an agreement with the Common Market for Eastern and Sothern Africa’s (COMESA) Adjustment Facility.

The funds are provided by the European Union under the ninth and 10th European Development Fund (EDF) and follow on from a similar deal in May 2015.

“The project particularly aims to strengthen the capacities of national and private institutions to achieve regional integration in enhancing the livestock and leather sector supply chains,” said Sindiso Ngwenya, COMESA Secretary General.

Mr Ngwenya called on Sudan to take advantage of the Regional Design Studio (RDS) project, which was launched by the COMESA-Leather and Leather Products Institute (LLPI) to help improve the competitiveness of the African leather industry in the international market.

He added that the project will contribute to the establishment of the ‘Leather City’ in the ElGaily Industrial zone of Sudan’s capital Khartoum as well as helping to implement plans to improve Sudan’s leather supply chain.
