Sudanese tannery sets sights on exports

Government officials paid a visit to the Nyala Leather Tannery in the Sudanese state of South Darfur to hear about production and the tannery’s plans.

The State Minister at the Ministry of Industry, Dr Abdo Dawod Suleiman, promised to promote South Darfur’s industrial sector.

In October, local press reported Nyala Leather Tannery exported its first tanned skins to China and that it had built an effluent treatment plant next door.

Government figures from 2015 show Sudan is home to around 30 million cows, 40 million sheep, 31 million goats and 5 million camels.

At that time, there were around 27 tanneries, with an annual capacity of 24 million pieces of sheep/goats skins and one million hides, and 21 leathergoods factories. However, the tanneries were operating at about half capacity due to a lack of technical know-how and old machinery.
