The six countries that make up the East African Community (EAC) should work together to promote industrialisation in the region and boost the contribution that the manufacturing sector can make to economic growth there.

This was the main message that Rwanda’s prime minister, Anastase Murekezi delivered during an address in Kigali on May 23 for the opening of the second edition of an event called the East African Manufacturing and Business Summit.

EAC countries (Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda) have set a target for the trading bloc to generate 25% of its GDP from manufacturing by 2032. Mr Murekezi said the contribution from manufacturing at the moment is nearer 10%.

“We need to continue working as one team to harmonise policies that will boost the manufacturing sector,” he said.
