Tanzania: Hides rot in warehouses due to tannery shortage

15/06/2017
The chairman of Tanzanian hides suppliers association Wangota has complained that hides are rotting in warehouses because the country’s seven tanneries do not have the capacity to process them.

James Matiko told The Citizen newspaper that the government should lower the duties on exports so as to make it profitable for traders.

He said: "More than 1,380 tonnes of hides worth Sh1.66 billion ($715,000) are rotting in warehouses countrywide and another 300 tonnes have been destroyed. We could export them, but the government raised the tariffs to up to 80% in 2015, saying it protected local factories, which are few. During a meeting of stakeholders in Dodoma, processors admitted that their capacity was extremely low. We shouldn't be scare of competition; it's healthy in business. It improves product quality."
