Tanzanian producers urged to stop exporting raw hides

The chairman of the Tanzania Trade Development Authority (TANTRADE), Christopher Chiza, has told industry stakeholders that the country benefits very little from the hides and skins industry as it exports them in raw form.

He revealed that Tanzania produced 3.1 million cow hides, 2.8 million goat skins and 550,000 sheep skins in 2015, but that the majority of these were exported to countries like Turkey, Italy, India and China. He said that only 250,000 pieces were processed locally.

"Stop exporting raw hides and skins,” he urged. “Process them here into products and in so doing you will increase national wealth, your own income and create jobs.”
