Tough times for Tanzania’s leather industry

The leather industry in Tanzania is facing an uncertain future due to lower demand from its major export markets for value-added leather products. That was the opinion of Joram Wakari, executive secretary of the Leather Association of Tanzania (LAT).

Speaking in the Tanzanian port city of of Dae es Salaam, he lamented that a drop in leather exports has caused some businesses to close down.

"The situation is worse as very little is being exported due to fall of demand from the countries including China and Pakistan,” he said, adding that it meant many warehouses had large stocks of semi-processed leather products.
