Concern in Tanzania over quality of skins

02/06/2016
Traders of skins and hides in Tanzania have expressed their concerns that poor skinning and handling is affecting the market value of hides from the country, according to local media reports.

Leo Akonaay, general manager of the Tanzania Meat Company, said that a lack of trained workers to correctly skin and handle the product is resulting in low quality skins. The Tanzania Trade Development Authority (TANTRADE) is to launch a training workshop for line operators at the facility to ensure the production of high quality skins that meet international standards.

The reports suggested that over 100,000 pieces are currently being held at the company’s abattoir in Dodoma due to poor quality and that 90% of skins produced at the facility don’t currently meet international standards.
