Tanzania: New tracking system for hides

Companies in Tanzania are attempting to curb the smuggling of hides and skins that is decimating the country’s leather industry by investing in a skin tracking skin.

Local reports have said smuggling has led to a 75% decline in export values, and representatives from the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Development met with industry leaders to cement a plan to tan hides past salted, or keep the material in the country to supply to the growing footwear sector.

“We have TZS 500 million ($300,000) for a hides and skins tracking system to ensure all the processed skins are monitored,” said Nelson Kilongozi, chairman of the Tanzania Tanners Association.

Tanning companies which have recently invested in the country include Xinghua International, Meru and Boggosh, said the report.
