Tanzania: skin smuggling escalates

06/03/2014
Reports from Tanzania say the smuggling of raw hides and skins through border posts has increased after the government implemented measures to curb the practice at Dar es Salaam port.

The Daily News quoted the head of the Leather Association of Tanzania, Joram Wakari, as saying smugglers were simply using other routes.

A number of the country’s tanneries have reportedly shut down over the past few years due to the lack of raw material. Mr Wakari called on the government to clamp down on other borders to save the leather industry and claim the tax they are due.
