Tanzania could ban hide exports

The government of Tanzania has indicated it will ban exports of raw hides and skins altogether after admitting that a 90% export duty on the material had not halted shipments outside the country.

After the Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF) at the start of July, trade and industry minister, Dr Abdallah Kigoda, said Tanzania had continued to lose money, in spite of the export duty, because it was failing to take the maximum possible value from its hide and skin resources.

Dr Kigoda said consultations between the government and representatives of the domestic leather industry are ongoing. “We need to make sure that our local producers using leather get more raw materials for their industries,” he added.
