Tanzanian tannery mismanaged, warns politician

A presidential candidate for Tanzania’s upcoming elections has warned his government will repossess a tannery and leathergoods factory if he comes to power.

Press in Africa have reported that Jakaya Kikwete thinks private investors have not done a good job of managing previously state-owned assets.

He said Tannery Moshi Leather and the Sisal bag manufacturer plant could be seized by the government.

"The tanneries could have had a trickle-down effect in the region, leading to manufacturing of leather products such as shoes, wallets and belts,” he said. “Thousands of jobs could have been created.”
Tanzania is holding elections in two weeks.
