China to source leather direct from Tanzania

Chinese authorities have signed an agreement with Tanzania to source leather directly from the African country, rather than going through Italian third parties, according to local reports.

AllAfrica.com reported Lu Youqing, the Chinese ambassador to Tanzania, as saying: "If there is no third party, business volume will increase. The agreement would increase the current trade volume that reached $2.5 billion in 2012."

Tanzania's Ministry of Industry, Trade and Marketing said it is aiming to add value by processing all skins domestically instead of exporting them raw.
