Tanzania: Tanners dismayed by government plan to increase wet blue levy

Press in Tanzania have reported that the government will increase the export levy on wet blue to 10%, to the dismay of tanners.

The country’s seven tanneries already suffer from shortages of raw material, Tanzania Tanners Association president Onorato Garavaglia told reporters, adding that he was surprised the government took the decision without consulting them.

He said many had already received orders for next month and cannot ask clients to pay higher prices, and so will have to take the hit themselves – with losses running into thousands of dollars.

Sabbas Woiso, managing director of Himo Tannery, told The Guardian the government had previously been considering a 2% levy, but only after measures were in place to curb the smuggling of skins across the border. “This is a huge shock to us,” he said.
