Tanzania: president wants leather and footwear students to hook up with industry
05/07/2013
President Kikwete said he wanted initiatives such as Tanzania’s Vocational Education and Training Authority and the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT) to build stronger links between the skills young people were learning from them and industrial-scale manufacturers. “You are doing a fantastic job,” he told the institutions, “but you should link these students to industries to enable them to produce in plenty for the market.”
He said footwear and leathergoods produced by DIT students were a case in point. “Work with industries so that these shoes are produced in plenty for the public to buy,” the president said. “On your own it will not be possible to produce massively.”
The students’ shoes and leathergoods were on display at the United Nations pavilion at the fair. The United Nations took part to promote ways of making the lives of women, children and young people in Tanzania better and to support job creation in the country.
