UNIDO launches course on hydrogen sulfide to help Tanzanian tanners

The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) has launched an online training course to teach leather-sector workers in Tanzania how to deal with hydrogen sulfide in tanneries. The module explains the dangers of hydrogen sulfide gas in tanneries and effluent treatment plants and explains what safety measures workers must take, including the necessary response if a worker is accidentally exposed to the gas.

This new module is part of a wider Tanzania-United Nations Development Assistance Programme framework for building up skills in the African country.

“Confronted with increasing legal and social pressures, no tanner can afford the luxury of not being familiar with the main issues and principles of occupational, safety and health protection pertaining to tannery operations,” UNIDO said on announcing the new course.

To pass, participants must follow an online course developed by UNIDO and then score a minimum of 80% in a test that follows.
