Indian leather industry signs new agreement with colleagues in east Africa

Media in India have reported that the All India Skin and Hide Tanners and Merchants Association (AISHTMA) signed new agreements on March 9 with three east African countries – Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda – to promote trade and investment partnerships in the leather sector.

AISHTMA is marking its centenary this year and invited government ministers and industry bodies from all three African countries to travel to Chennai to attend a function to mark the occasion and to sign the new agreements.

“East African countries, which are rich in raw materials for the leather sector, are looking to India as a partner for development,” said AISHTMA president Rafeeque Ahmed at the event. “They have seen India’s leather industry’s growth in the past four decades, from less than $1 billion in exports level to $6 billion.”

The agreements will focus on supporting activities related to the production of quality hides and skins, to leather manufacturing and adding value to local raw material. Three months ago, a 10-member Indian leather industry delegation visited the three countries and interacted with government officials about the possible investment and collaboration opportunities to develop the leather industry there.

These developments are part of a framework to support Indian trade with and investment in Africa; it is a project funded by the United Kingdom’s department for international development (DFID).
