UNIDO publishes study on establishment of leather parks

03/05/2017
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has published a case study entitled “Leather Industry Parks – Planning, implementation, benefits, challenges and experience”, which examines the environmental issues associated with the establishment of leather clusters.

The study focused on leather parks in the following regions: Buenos Aires, Argentina; Savar, Bangladesh; Al Robeky, Egypt; Modjo, Ethiopia; Santa Croce Sull’Arno, Italy; Leon, Mexico; Batha Atha, Sri Lanka; El Fejja, Tunisa; Bursa and Tuzla, Turkey.

It discusses relocation as a potential solution when those within a leather cluster have been unable to deal collectively with the environmental challenges by means of a common waste treatment facility. It explains that relocation can often prove to be a very complex process and detailed the lessons learned from the study of individual clusters.

The study was presented at a two-week workshop that UNIDO has organised in Bursa, Turkey. It got underway on May 2, with its main focus on leather and its sustainable production. It welcomed 16 delegates from Albania, Bangladesh, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Turkey, United Republic of Tanzania, Vietnam and Zimbabwe.

UNIDO said the workshop aims to “promote better knowledge and understanding of sustainable production in the leather processing industry”. It is also targeting improved interaction and exchange of ideas between participants.
