Bangladeshi authorities urged to complete Savar infrastructure

17/10/2017
The Bangladeshi High Court issued an order on October 12 indicating that the authorities must put in place all of the infrastructure necessary to complete the tanning cluster at Savar within four weeks.

The order was issued following an appeal by the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA). A key step in the development of the cluster is the completion of a common effluent treatment plant.

A total of 154 tanneries have been ordered by the government to relocate from the Hazaribagh cluster to the new zone in Savar, but only a limited number have so far done so. A number of deadlines set by the government have passed.
