Savar cluster “could be further expanded”

In October, tanners were set a deadline of December 30 for relocating their operations from the Hazaribagh area of the capital city Dhaka to the Savar Tannery Estate, which is still under construction. Many companies have been reluctant to make the move due to a lack of clarity on who will pay for facilities such as the estate’s central effluent treatment plant.
The second phase of the project would see a further 200 acres of land incorporated into the cluster. It would accommodate those tanneries excluded from the original development. Local media reports suggest 30-35 plots of land would be allocated to tanners, with a further 60-70 for leathergoods manufacturers. There would also be space for tanneries from outside Dhaka who wish to relocate as well as room for a vocational training institute and research centre.
