Bangladesh: tanners fail in bid for more time over Savar move

The government in Bangladesh has turned down a request from the country’s tanners for more time to execute a move to the new dedicated leather production zone in Savar.

Local media have reported that tanning industry representatives attended a meeting with the industry minister on April 13 and submitted the request for more time. The minister, Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, turned down the request.

He later said: “All the decisions taken earlier by the government relating to relocation of tanneries from Hazaribagh to Savar will be enforced. We want the tanners to relocate their units without delay. We will not tolerate laxity.”

Other reports suggest tannery owners face arrest if they delay the move any further.
