Rawhide traders call for reopening of two tanneries
05/09/2016
Mohammed Sekandar, president of the Cooperative Society, said at a press conference in the city that he had sought the help of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to reopen Madina Tannery and Riff Leather. The two tanneries were recently closed due to their lack of effluent treatment plant.
Mr Sekandar said the closures had made his company completely dependent on orders from tanneries in Dhaka. He added that it had also caused hundreds of tannery workers to lost their jobs.
Riff Leather is in the process of installing an effluent treatment plant but Madina Tannery currently lacks the funds to do so.
