Bangladeshi tanners must pay $1,000 per week in fines

Bangladesh’s supreme court ruled on July 18 that 154 tanneries located in the old industry cluster Hazaribagh must pay fines of around $130 per day until they move production to the new cluster at Savar.

The proposed move to Savar has been in preparation for years, with tanners and the government agreeing that the new set-up will make environmental management easier for Bangladesh’s leather industry, but there has been a lack of clarity on whether the industry or the government will pay for facilities such as Savar’s central effluent treatment plant.

At the time of the new supreme court decision in July, the industry ministry said only one company, Reliance, has completed the move to Savar. It said 144 have started the process, while ten Hazaribagh tanneries have shown no sign of moving their operations to Savar.
