Hazaribagh tanneries may have to lay off staff

The owners of tanneries in the Hazaribagh cluster in Bangladesh are considering laying off staff if the Department of the Environment complies with a court order to cut off their utility services, according to local media reports.

At the beginning of March, the High Court of Bangladesh ordered the immediate closure of all tanneries still operating in the cluster. This includes the cutting off of gas, electricity and water. The order was later upheld by the country’s Supreme Court.

The Bangladesh Tanners’ Association (BTA) met with tannery owners on March 13 to discuss their next move. Shakhawat Ullah, secretary general of the BTA, said potential layoffs were among the issues discussed at the meeting. He said that tanneries will have “no option” but to lay off staff if the utility lines are cut.

For his part, the president of the Tannery Workers’ Union Abul Kalam Azad said that workers shouldn’t be the ones to suffer as a result of the dispute between the government and the tannery owners.
