New Sam Setter blog brings Bangladesh update
Regular columnist Sam Setter has written a new blog on the subject of the tanning industry in Bangladesh, bringing a much-needed update on the move of tanners there from the old industry cluster at Hazaribagh to the new cluster at Savar. Both districts are near the capital, Dhaka.

This is a rare eye-witness account of what is really going on in this much-talked-about leather-producing country.

The column, which you can read here, reveals the number of tanners that have already begun operations in Savar and also explains what they are able to do in Savar today and what parts of the planned infrastructure have still to get up and running at the new site.

It also contains a warning about developments that still need to take place for the wellbeing of workers at Savar and concludes with the chilling statement that, if the situation continues as it is today, “five years from now, Savar will be much, much worse than Hazaribagh”.
