Judge orders immediate closure of Hazaribagh tanneries

07/03/2017
The High Court of Bangladesh has ordered the country’s Department of the Environment to immediately close all tanneries still operating at the Hazaribagh cluster, according to local media reports.

It is the latest stage of a long-running saga which has seen the government make continued attempts to encourage leather producers to relocate from Hazaribagh to the new tanning cluster at Savar. The most recent deadline for this move to be completed was January 31, but it passed with little movement of note.

The court also ordered utility services, including gas, electricity and water, to be cut off following a petition filed by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers’ Association (BELA).

The director general of the Department of the Environment has been instructed to submit a report on the compliance of the order by April 6, with a court hearing on this issue scheduled for April 10.
