Leathergoods growth helps industry in Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s beleaguered leather industry has recorded a 2.8% year-on-year increase in revenues during the first nine months of the current financial year. Revenues over the nine-month period from July 2015 to March 2016, were just over $850 million.

The contribution of finished leather exports to the total was down by 30% compared to the same period in the previous financial year, reaching just over $210 million this time. Exports of leather footwear were flat at $354 million. Growth came from leathergoods, with revenues this time of more than $285 million, showing an increase compared to the same nine-month period in the pervious financial year of almost 70%.

Bangladesh’s government has set the local leather industry a target for this financial year of reaching $1.13 billion in revenues.
