Ministry rules Bangladesh’s tannery park must close

Bangladesh’s Ministry for the Environment has agreed to shut the Savar tannery estate as it lacks facilities to treat all its waste, according to a report in local press.

The Daily Star reported the estate could reopen if it gets environmental clearance.

There are around 160 tanneries in the industrial park. They relocated from Hazaribagh in a move that took over a decade. It was hoped the move would be a chance for tanneries to improve their environmental credentials.
