Figures from Bangladesh’s Export Promotions Bureau (EPB) have shown that the country’s leather exports fell by more than 6% in value during the financial year that ran from July 2018 to June 2019.

Exports of leather, leathergoods and leather footwear were worth $1.01 billion, compared to $1.08 billion in the previous 12-month period.

The total value of the leather products that were exported was $247.3 million, down 26.6% year-on-year. Exports of processed leather dropped 10% to $164.6 million, but exports of leather footwear increased nearly 7.5% to $607.9 million.

Those within Bangladesh’s leather sector have cited delays in the construction of the central effluent treatment plant at the Savar cluster as the reason for the decline, according to local media reports.
