Bangladesh tanners ask for tax holiday

08/05/2018
Tanners in Bangladesh have blamed congestion at the country’s main port at Chittagong, a lack of skilled tannery workers, poor product diversification, and poor infrastructure at the new tanning complex at Savar for a downturn in the leather industry’s performance.

Figures for the first nine months of the current financial year, July 2017-March 2018, show a decline in revenues from exports of finished leather, footwear and leathergoods. Export revenues fell to just under $850 million, 8% less than in the same months the previous financial year.

The Bangladesh Tanners’ Association has asked the government to offer them a tax holiday in the new financial year and to set up bonded warehouse facilities at Savar to reduce import duties on raw materials and chemicals.
