Concerns continue at Savar ahead of Eid al-Adha

The general secretary of the Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA), Shakawat Ullah, has said tanners in the Savar cluster are facing the same problems as they did last year, as the country prepares for the time of Eid al-Adha, the festival of the sacrifice.

At the festival, families who can afford it slaughter a sheep or goat (other animals are also possible), meaning a large number of hides and skins become available.

According to local media, only 114 out of the 155 tanneries to have been allocated plots at the Savar cluster are in operation.

Among the key problems is that the central effluent treatment plant there is not yet fully operational. The roads surrounding the cluster are also in need of repair work and are not thought to be capable of bearing the load of thousands of trucks carrying hides.
