Industry body blames Savar move for fall in leather export value

Leather sector exports from Bangladesh for the first four months of the current fiscal year (July-October 2017) were flat compared to the same months last year at just under $430 million. The figures come from the Asian country’s export promotions bureau.

Exports of finished leather fell in value over the four-month period, compared to a year earlier, with a drop of 34.4% to just under $60 million.

The value of shipments both of leathergoods and of leather footwear went up, by 13.8% and by 5.7% respectively, reaching totals for the four months of $166.9 million and $202.2 million.

Industry body the Bangladesh Tanners’ Association has said the decline in value of exports of finished leather is because of the move of tanneries from the old Dhaka cluster at Hazaribagh to the new one at Savar, meaning leather manufacturers have been operating at 50% of capacity.
