Malawi is missing out on leather opportunities

Malawi’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Tourism has said the country’s leather industry is missing out on nearly $7 million per year due to a lack of proper processing machinery.

The comments were made by the ministry’s industrial and development officer, Yasin Mwachande, based on research by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Institute (SMEDI).

“The ministry, is trying to promote the leather sector, and this is evident by it being prioritised in the National Industry Policy,” he insisted.

He indicated that Malawi typically exports raw hides and skins at very low prices to countries like Tanzania, China and Zimbabwe, where it is processed. These countries then sell the resulting products back to Malawi at higher prices, he added.

Mr Mwachande said there should be an increased focus on adding value to skins and hides before they are exported.
