Boost for Malawi’s leather industry

07/11/2016
The government of Malawi has launched a new association for the country’s leather industry as part of a programme designed to encourage small businesses and boost the economy.

The Leather Industry Association of Malawi (LIAMA) in the capital Lilongwe was launched by Joseph Mwanamvekha, minister of industry, trade and tourism.

He said the government is training LIAMA members with the help of the COMESA-Leather Products Institute so that they have the skills to produce high-quality finished leather products.

Mr Mwanamvekha added that the government is committed to developing Malawi’s leather industry so that it can generate more value, saying it is currently limited to exporting raw leather.
