Tanners experiment with PU

04/07/2019
Some large tanners have begun to experiment with polyurethane (PU) bonded materials to become “more competitive”, according to raw materials market expert Ken Maxfield’s sources.

Mr Maxfield – who has 30 years’ experience of tracking the hide market in the US – says his sources think a few tanners are trying new tactics to appeal to buyers who are considering moving away from leather. It could also help to fill some of the gaps in capacity, they said.

This is at odds with the view that leather manufacturers will fare better by emphasising the authenticity and naturalness of leather.
