Sudan hosts ALLPI annual forum

The Africa Leather and Leather Products Institute (ALLPI), formerly known as COMESA-LLPI, held its annual consultative forum in mid-December in Port Sudan, Sudan.

The theme of the forum was: ‘Focusing on innovation to transform Africa’s leather sector towards productivity and competitiveness’.

It was attended by participants from 11 African countries - Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. There were also representatives of partner organisations in India, Italy and Turkey. 

Among the objectives that guided the forum were:

• Creating opportunities to share success stories from national and regional leather sectors;
• Emphasising the importance of export readiness;
• Identifying the key challenges towards achieving sustainable regional leather sector development;
• Implementing sustainable production processes in the leather industry.
