Press in Kenya have reported The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) is aiming to boost its annual earnings from the leather sector tenfold to $30 billion, quoting Nicholas Mudungwe, executive director of the bloc's Africa Leather and Leather Products Institute.

The trading bloc produces around $3 billion worth of leather products each year while importing an additional $2 billion from the rest of the world, according to the report.

Mr Mudungwe said tanning raw leather could significantly raise the sector's contribution and that Kenya and Ethiopia could become regional hubs for leather exports.
