Africa has the resources to grow its leather industry

The executive director of the Africa Leather and Leather Products Institute (ALLPI), formerly known as COMESA-LLPI, Mwinyikione Mwinyihija, has urged African countries to develop their own quality leather products in order to reduce their dependency on imports.

In an interview with local media, Mr Mwinyihija said they have the natural resources to accomplish this, pointing to the abundance of raw materials on the continent and to its large population of young people.

He also called on the continent’s nations to work together to develop their leather sectors, highlighting in particular the work ALLPI is doing to help governments develop their own national leather value chain strategies.
