The Africa Leather and Leather Products Institute (ALLPI), formerly known as COMESA-LLPI, held a scientific meeting in Mombasa, Kenya at the start of August, during which researchers from various African countries presented their latest projects.

The speakers were drawn from five universities: Makerere University Business School (Uganda), Sudan University of Science and Technology (Sudan), National University of Science and Technology (Zimbabwe), Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (Kenya), and Ethiopian Institute of Textile & Fashion Technology (Ethiopia).

The ongoing research topics discussed included the impact of restrictions on the export of hides and skins; how to encourage the adoption of technology by artisans and SMEs; and the modification of leather waste gelatine resin using fruit extracts.

Future concepts presented included the development of the leather sector in Sudan and design related challenges in the Ethiopian footwear and leathergoods sector.
