Inga Gubeka: Consumers want to see leathergoods in person
For independent luxury leathergoods makers, selling more online may require making products available to be seen in person, according to the founder of Johannesburg-based leathergoods brand Inga Atelier.

Talking to the BBC, designer Inga Gubeka said that online sales of his brand’s leathergoods — which include bags and accessories made with African leather — improved after he opened a bricks-and-mortar store.

While there is a strong emerging middle class in South Africa who are purchasing known luxury brands like Louis Vuitton and Chanel, he suggested that people are skeptical of lesser-known brands online.

Mr Gubeka said customers want the option of touching and feeling a product before spending $200-$400 on it.

With the aim of establishing a stronger local luxury goods market, he opened his store. Doing so, he said, “activated” his online sales, which he attributed to the trust instilled by having a physical location.
