Comesa countries can multiply hides and skins value by 12

In comments he made to media ahead of the summit, which ended in Lusaka on July 19, ALLPI’s programme co-ordinator, Nicholas Mudungwe, said selling raw material to tanners in China and Italy is costing Comesa a fair share of the global leather market.
He said Comesa countries have a combined share of around 11% of the world’s livestock but only a 3% share of the leather and leather products market. Mr Mudungwe said that holding onto hides and skins instead and processing them into finished leather and finished products on home soil would boost economies and create jobs.
ALLPI’s figures suggest processing local material in this way can multiply its value by 12. The institute is a specialist agent of Comesa.
